WELCOME!
A warm welcome to the official website of the Manama
Singers. We are a multicultural group of enthusiastic
and committed singers from all walks of life who
perform the finest of choral works under the baton of
our dedicated Music Director, Mr. Alistair Auld.
I am extremely pleased and proud to announce GULF
AIR's sponsorship of the Manama Singers. Their
generosity enables us to fly musicians and singers to
Bahrain from all over the world to join us for our four
annual concerts.
I am also delighted that the CROWNE PLAZA has this
year become our sole concert venue enabling us to
perform all our 2009 concerts at their luxurious
convention centre. I thank them for their loyal support.
2008/9 SEASON
We go into the summer break with thoughts of new
music to perform in 2009/10. The 2008/9 season
closed with a large choir and orchestra assembled to
perform Puccini, Haydn and Handel.
Puccini’s Messa di Gloria’ is an uplifting work of
celebration with themes of redemption, glory and
peace. Insanae et vane curae is a turbulent, sacred
chorus written in 1797 by Franz Joseph Haydn. ‘Zadok
the Priest’ is one of Handel’s most recognisable
choral pieces today not least because it has been
sung at all British coronation services since it was
first performed as an anthem for the coronation of
George II of Great Britain in 1727.
In March 2009 we brought theatre to our music and
song in a rousing performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’
s hilarious operetta Trial By Jury. Set in a Victorian
courtroom it told the story of a jilted bride who seeks
damages from her philandering ex-fiancee. The halls
of the venue were filled with fun that evening as the
choir proved yet again their versatility in bringing all
genres of music to the island.
Our very successful Christmas concerts are known to
launch the festive season here in Bahrain and once
again the Christmas season of 2008 saw the singers
performing twice to packed houses.
The start of the new season presented an exciting
challenge for the Choir as we prepared for Brahms’
great Requiem, performed on November 7th 2008 at
the magnificent Crowne Plaza. Over 122 singers and
an orchestra of 70 performed this magnificent work
to much acclaim from the audience and press alike.
Singing is our passion and the Manama Singers
continue to branch into varied genres of music in
order to challenge ourselves as musicians and truly
entertain our audiences. Over the years and since its
inception, many of the Manama Singers’ dreams have
been brought to fruition by the generous sponsorship
of individuals and companies. We are indebted to
GULF AIR, our sole airline sponsor and the CROWNE
PLAZA our sole venue sponsor whose generosity is
hugely appreciated by every member of the choir and
orchestra.
Martin Whitaker and Fred Donnelly are true friends of
the Arts. Their patronage has, over the years, enabled
our choir to achieve its goals. We are also
supported by a dedicated team of Committee
members who help steer the ship in the right
direction! Our visionary Music Director Alistair Auld
continuously challenges us as a choir and stretches
us musically.
Every Tuesday evening we meet to rehearse in St.
Christopher’s Cathedral. All are very welcome and
auditions are not required for new members. We
perform four major concerts annually. We invite
choirs from Oman, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and
Dhahran to join us for our November and June
productions. Musicians from the Gulf and beyond, fly
to Bahrain to play with our resident orchestra the
Bahrain Sinfonia. We delight in the fact that we are a
beacon of culture and the arts in this region and that
we can facilitate the coming together of great singers
and musicians in Bahrain.
